Gavin DeGraw and me circa 2006 - one of my first nights out in the big (NY) city. Our group of gals hung with him all night at a jazz club. After most of the patrons had left, Gavin asked for a guitar and closed the club with an impromptu performance. It was intimate and special and I will be fond of him always because of it.

A (Ward 54) Christmas Story

“Oh. My. Gosh. If I have slacked at all this past year I am making up for it now. Got to work at 10am and have literally been decorating nonstop. Had to eat my salad while I drew and cut out two 5ft (thick) cardboard sleighs with a tiny exacto knife. I have blisters on my hands and I am completely flushed from overworking myself. There’s red and silver paint all over me. Because we have absolutely no budget I spent a large amount of time twisting tin foil into what will be sleigh reigns. And then there were the snowflakes. And the fake presents. And don’t forget about the reindeer I’m going to have to somehow create.

This is only the beginning of what while undoubtedly develop into a great big green and red monster.

However… while it sounds like I am bitching I am really happy I came in. It lifted the patients’ moods, and I have to remember that that is why I got into all of this in the first place.

I got to work this morning with a vision and knew how hard it would be to make it all happen. Dr. Burke and I had absolutely no help and were scrounging for materials. I was getting a little overwhelmed when all of sudden I looked down the long hallway of the ward and there they were… about 12 men and women in Santa hats (and one fully dressed Santa) walking towards us with carts full of Christmas goodies and decorations. I yelled, “Dr. Burke! Look!”, with excitement. Neither one of us could believe the timing. It was one of those Christmas miracles. No one had any idea these people were even coming…

As they filed in Dr. Burke attempted to give a speech about how much this meant to us, but as she spoke we both began to cry. I just couldn’t help it. Sometimes I feel like we’re trying to take care of the lost children (except they’re men and women).

The group from Christ Church set up a Christmas tree and passed out presents to the patients. The energy in the room was amazing. They left me with a Santa hat and my spirit renewed. Oh and I forgot to mention that it was a snowy day in DC so it really made it feel like Christmas.

Anyway, I’m attaching a pic of the sleigh I made. It’s silver around the edges but you can’t tell. When I’m done I’ll send a pic of the entire hallway.”

I’ve been thinking of a way to say thank you for making Battle Studies such a huge success out of the gate… I’ve also been thinking of a way to use tumblr as a means of posting some more substantial stuff… So here’s a very raw, live solo version of “Edge of Desire” I just recorded in my apartment as a way to show my gratitude to you all for extending my time in this amazing career you’ve helped me build.

I think if you were kind enough to spent the 13 bucks, you should get some free music for the next good while.

So here it is. A song about late night longing recorded at 3am. iPhone dinging in the background and all…(that’s how I knew the take was going to be worth sticking with, as the best takes always get interrupted.)
